My bedroom redo last spring turned out just the way I wanted it. The quilt is especially meaningful. I made it for my husband on our 28th wedding anniversary. It is called “The Fairview Park Quilt” in memory of our first date, and the park where we were engaged 3 weeks later. I love the pictures of us as children above the dresser, and the fun wall mural I painted instead of a headboard. Our room is inviting, relaxing, colorful, and restful. Perfect for us!!
This is my bedroom. It is the only space in my house untouched by children! It is tranquil and calm. My favorite parts are the bamboo shades and the brown pillowcase with the circles on them (which I made and am very proud of).

It’s time for the next Design Challenge! This time our sponsor is FLOR. I absolutely love their designs and the quality of their product!
The winner will get to choose one of the following three carpet patterns and can choose any available color they’d like within the style! That means that there are 26 different pattern/color combinations for the winner to pick from!
You will get 12 tiles which is enough tiles to create a 5′ x 7′ area rug. They can also be reconfigured if you need a smaller one for a mudroom, a long and narrow one for a hallway, or any number of other spaces! Thanks so much to our wonderful sponsor FLOR! (Don’t forget to follow them on Twitter! @FLOR_ )
Here’s the form! Please remember that images must be sized less than 1024 kb. Can’t wait to see everyone’s favorite spaces!!
I set out to do a surprise patio makeover for my mother, who was allowing us to live in her home while she was away for a year. It’s now a beautiful, functional, eco-friendly space. The furniture is made of FSC-certified wood, the blinds are bamboo, the rug is recycled plastic, the carafe set is recycled glass, and the planters are reused (we painted some old dirty ones). It’s now a space that we all love to spend time time, and though there are some other cosmetic changes we’d like to make (like painting the door black and staining the concrete), overall, we’re VERY happy with the results!
Our patio spaces were taken over with toys. We cut down some branches and moved the toys under a tree. We then moved our patio furniture in the shade of our deck and added a hammock.
Budget is always a concern so we repurposed the deck, soil and local river rocks. In an urban environment we were also faced with maximizing space to accomodate multiple seating areas, grass for the dog and flowers.
5. Laura from California
This is a relatively small back yard in Irvine, California and had not been touched since the family moved in 5 years before. The only remaining feature is a lime tree. I used lots of curving lines to increase the planting area in some places and pull back to make room for living space in others. We covered the existing slump stone fence with smooth stucco in a shade darker than the house to give it a more harmonious appearance and also give a nice dark background for the plants to stand out against. We added several large pots (with irrigation, lighting and drainage) to break up the transition from the stone and concrete deck to the vertical planter walls. The garden path and gate were added where once there was a dead end; now party guests can approach the front door and easily be directed to the back yard for a bbq get together.
