Home Tour: Smile and Wave

I am so inspired by Rachel Denbow’s creativity.  She blogs over at Smile and Wave and I’m fascinated how she keeps on top of a blog, teaching online classes {check out her classes over at Red Velvet Art and her most recent Home Ec class– I really, really want to take this given my recent sewing challenge!} and motherhood all the while keeping her home beautiful and inspiring.

Trust me, I know how impossible this is to do.  I work about 25-30 hours a week outside of the home {I do fancy elearning design for a local college and e-marketing with a friend of mine… and I LOVE what I do}.  By the time I get home, and make sure my family is tended to, I barely have enough energy to keep on top of projects.  I am so very thankful for this blog, and for you.  Being in this space motivates me to keep my creativity churning.

Because I really do love creating.  {But sometimes paying the bills must come first!}

Now is where I apologize for going off tangent.  This post really isn’t about me.  It’s about the amazing Rachel Denbow.  Seriously.  Take a look at her home.

Reader Question: Bright Colors?

Kara sent us a question that I feel needed an answer.  I think many of you have the same question:

“I love bright colors!  They make me happy and feel alive.  But I am curious as to how many rooms can be bright.  Can I have my kitchen, living room, and bedroom in bright colors or do they all need to be different?  Many of my friends have dark colored living rooms.  Is that a typical theme for a living room?  I am loving the Anthroplogie Bella Hothouse bedspread but I also love their bright potholders and funky colored latte bowls.  Too much of the same thing?  Any suggestions for how to have variety in my home decor but without being completely dark?  Thank you for your help!”

Just like Kara, I LOVE bright colors!  Colors make me feel excited, full of energy, and are just plain fun!  I would say make ALL your rooms bright!  The thing to remember is to keep it grounded.  Keep your larger furniture pieces neutral and your main color bright yet a nice backdrop for everything else in the room. Many people choose dark colored living rooms because, to be honest, it’s a safe choice and many times, easier to plan around because accessories, pillows, and window treatments are easier to find for darker, more standard living room designs.  Don’t be scared to try more bright colors!  It’s your house and you want it to be as comfortable as it can be for you and your personality!

Here are some fun colorful rooms that are well designed:

{Check out the full house here.  It has just about every color imaginable, but it works because of the grounded neutral floor and walls.}

{Designer Doug Myers uses natural materials juxtaposed with bright cheerful colors for a great home design!}

{Lifestyle Architect Windsor Smith kept everything neutral with a wonderful splash of color on the floor.  I’d probably add a few more coordinating accessories to bring the color up into the room a little more.}

Check out our Q&A with Amy Butler for some bright, cheerful bedding and rugs to add to your own decor.

Monday Redesign: Simple & Colorful Office

Organizing is on my mind so I thought an office redesign would be suiting for the New Year.  {It must be the fact that I’ve spent nearly all weekend in one closet or another – please tell me I wasn’t the only one doing that}.

Office Redesign

And now for a break down of the goodies:

  1. I wanted a fun color palette with a gray undertone and I think I achieved that.  I envision white walls with an orange accent wall {the wall that the desk will sit against}.  A perfect mandarin color, I think, is Sherwin Williams SW 6891.
  2. The desk is simple and beautiful, no.  It comes from Room & Board… one of my favorite places to shop these days.
  3. This chair is also simple and fun.  I love the curves and color.
  4. This rug is a great foundation for the room.  Wouldn’t this room be perfect on a room with tile, or wooden floors?
  5. I added this ottoman for extra seating and for a little extra storage too.  Sometimes when I’m working at my desk, I like to prop my feet up.
  6. Every office should have a file box to keep you organized.  And of course, I love the orange color of this one.
  7. A simple lamp for a really great price.  I love this lamp!
  8. And a birdie print for some wall art.  I think this is the perfect little touch to this room.  A great conversation piece, and something to keep you inspired.

I hope this redesign keeps you motivated to get organizing this New Year.  An organized office is a productive office, or something like that.  ;)

Furniture-Restyled

I was introduced to a Flickr Pool called Furniture Redo via How About Orange and thought I’d share some of my favorites.  I love repainting older furniture pieces for a great new look!  (In fact I’m repainting one of my pieces now!  I’ll share shortly!)  It’s super easy and gives you a whole new look!

Modern Mobiles

When I say mobile you probably automatically think of the mobile hanging over a child’s crib, right?  Here’s some great mobiles that would work great in a modern bedroom, office, or living room!

Try this one from Spunky Sprout.

Or maybe this one from from Spin Designs at Etsy.
