Children’s Study Spaces

When planning a study space for your children, remember that everyone learns differently!  Keep this in mind as you plan your space.  Maybe they like studying with music on…make sure that there’s some type of music source close by so that they don’t have to get up to switch out music or adjust controls.  If they get easily distracted make sure it’ s in a quiet place and not looking out towards a window.   Even if you don’t have a whole room to devote to a study space a little section of their bedroom will work just fine!

Color theory is another post altogether so don’t worry too much about what color you choose to have in the space.  If it’s already in an existing room you’re probably going to go with colors already there.  If you’d like to add some color, and make it more of a personalized space for your child, go with their favorite color!  They’ll probably want to stay there longer because of it!

Make sure that you’ve got enough supplies close at hand so their train of thought doesn’t get broken too often as their looking for more paper, pens, staplers, etc.

Here are some inspiring study spaces I’ve found!

Monday Redesign: Mike’s Bedroom

Remember Mike’s bedroom? I absolutely love the new paint- it gives a fresh and clean feel to the space already. I added some finishing touches to rock this bedroom out of this world.

Mike Bedroom Redesign After

Here’s the breakdown of the goods:

  1. I am replacing the picture hanging above the bed with a headboard.  This is an inexpensive and creative headboard– an old solid panel door.  This gives the bed something to be grounded on.  Although I liked the painting hanging above the bed, it’s was too small to be the main focal point above the bed.  To create this custom headboard, go to an antique store or flea market and find an old solid wood door.  Once you have found the right door, strip, prime and paint it with a darker blue color and hang it above the bed.  For further instructions, go here.
  2. I have found simple and fun bedding from 2modern.  I love white sheets with a color pop.  It makes the room look fresh and clean.
  3. I kept your matching end tables in the room, but have found matching lamps from Ikea.  Having matching lamps on top of the end tables maintains the balance of the room.
  4. Since both of you spend time quite a bit of time in the bedroom working and hanging out, I found this great desk from Target.  It’s simple, yet functional.  Adding this to the other side, across from the bed will work perfectly.  I also think it will help you focus more when you need to and give you a change of scenery once and a while.  I would hang the migration wall art that you already have above this desk.
  5. The Jules desk chair from Ikea is the perfect match for your new desk.  It’s clean, modern and simple.
  6. I am adding a new chair to the other side of the room from Urban Outfitters.  I love the colors of this chair and I thought some extra seating would be nice since you hang out in your bedroom so often.  I would place this between the window and the closet, giving enough walking distance to the closet, and the bed.  I would hang the long mirror behind the chair (between the chair and closet) and I would hang the picture you have above the bed currently and move this above the chair.
  7. I used your owl pillow on top of the bed and added a couple aqua pillows to tie in the wall color and pull everything together.

To give you a better idea of the layout, here is a drawing of placement for everything.

I hope you like the new layout of your bedroom, Mike.  I love this color combination and had such a great time putting it together.

Fresh Flowers on the inside

Fresh flowers

{Flowers are Peony & Iris}

I love fresh flowers and they are an easy way to brighten up any space in the home.  I put these flowers on my desk and I honestly think they are making me work harder today.  And they smell phenomenal.

A huge thanks to my mother and her beautiful flower garden!

What are your favorite flowers to pick and bring indoors?

As a Design Psychologist, the ideal format for an office is the one in which manifests the most productivity! We all have different working “styles”; for example some of us like to “spread out” when we work. If you are a visual person you need to “see” all the working parts of a project in order to decipher it and complete it. For those of us that are focus challenged (easily distracted), we need to only have one task on our desk at a time or we’ll complete nothing! Your working style must be determined in order to understand the space you require and the best way to tackle projects. Furniture placement is very important, as well. Again it is key to examine how you work and what tools are necessary to complete each task. For myself, I am visual and I need space to “see” my colors, fabrics, designs and ideas. I also need drawing space, computer space, printers and scanners nearby. If you have the room to spread out, it’s best to keep like tools together. For example, my drawing table, art supplies and paper are all on one side of my office with display boards above them, likewise my desk holds my computer, scanner, printer and pull out writing shelf for more cerebral work. The key to my office layout is a rolling chair!

Hold out your hands in front of you – Your eyes and the ends of your fingers make your “working triangle”! Using Design Psychology, I have learned you need to see and be able to reach everything efficiently or you won’t use them. If you can’t access a tool, machine, or system, with little effort you won’t do it! The piles on your desk will grow, along with your inefficiency.  Make your office work for you so you can work less and relax more !
