How To: Displaying Wall Art

Looking for different and creative ways to make focal points out of your wall art?  Here are a couple different variations you can use.

Symmetrical

A grid-like arrangement where the wall art is hung the same distance apart.  Symmetrical displays are typically hung using matching frames.

Asymmetrical aka Art Gallery Layout

Don’t be afraid.  This is actually one of the easier arrangements because it’s completely random.

Looking for help in hanging your wall art? Give this a try.  Before committing with nails, hang up pieces of paper the same size as your pictures using painters tape.  Painter’s tape will keep the paint on your walls safe.  Doing a test run on your wall will give a great representation of how the arrangement will look once hung.

Another way you can do it is by laying the picture on the floor before hanging them on the wall.  You can also check out this handy tutorial full of tips from Design FormuLA on making a picture wall collage

DIY Time

Have a little time on your hands this summer and want to do something fun with the kids?  Here are a couple ideas:

Ashley Ann made these great paper bird paintings with a couple canvases, scrapbook paper and Mod Podge.  Don’t you just love the paper she used?  {Of course it’s Amy Butler}.

One of my favorite parenting blogs is Made By Joel.  He’s amazingly creative with his children and I can’t believe what he comes up with.  What an amazing dad!  He whipped up this paper city with vehicles for his children to play with.  He has downloads available with his graphics, but you can always have your children help you create your own unique city too.

Want to make your own disco ball?  CraftBits.com has a step by step tutorial that is kid friendly.

How do you keep your children happy and productive over the summer?  What projects are you working on to keep your children involved?

Inspiration: Mosaic Tiles

I’ve always loved glass mosaic tiles!  Their glossy and almost ethereal look always mesmerizes me!  I cannot wait to visit Italy this summer to see some gorgeous mosaics that are hundreds, if not thousands, of years old.  One particular example is from the Florence Baptistery:

Florence: the mosaic ceiling of the Baptistery

This is the ceiling.  No, it’s not painted, it’s glass mosaics, many of the pieces are the size of your pinkie finger nail.  So tiny but so effective as a whole!  (Click on the photo to take you to the source.)

Baptisterio, Florence

This is a close up…still looks a lot like a painting, but it’s mosaics!  Amazing!  (Click on the photo for source.)

I ran across this more modern company, New Ravenna Mosaics, and absolutely fell in love with their product!  Here are a few of my favorites from their gallery:

P.S. I’ve got a pretty good list of things to see and do in Florence and Rome but  if anyone has a favorite store, restaurant, or overlooked site that I must visit please let me know!
