Monday Redesign: Simple & Colorful Office

Organizing is on my mind so I thought an office redesign would be suiting for the New Year.  {It must be the fact that I’ve spent nearly all weekend in one closet or another – please tell me I wasn’t the only one doing that}.

Office Redesign

And now for a break down of the goodies:

  1. I wanted a fun color palette with a gray undertone and I think I achieved that.  I envision white walls with an orange accent wall {the wall that the desk will sit against}.  A perfect mandarin color, I think, is Sherwin Williams SW 6891.
  2. The desk is simple and beautiful, no.  It comes from Room & Board… one of my favorite places to shop these days.
  3. This chair is also simple and fun.  I love the curves and color.
  4. This rug is a great foundation for the room.  Wouldn’t this room be perfect on a room with tile, or wooden floors?
  5. I added this ottoman for extra seating and for a little extra storage too.  Sometimes when I’m working at my desk, I like to prop my feet up.
  6. Every office should have a file box to keep you organized.  And of course, I love the orange color of this one.
  7. A simple lamp for a really great price.  I love this lamp!
  8. And a birdie print for some wall art.  I think this is the perfect little touch to this room.  A great conversation piece, and something to keep you inspired.

I hope this redesign keeps you motivated to get organizing this New Year.  An organized office is a productive office, or something like that.  ;)

Monday Redesign-Chic Office

Looks like the office was the clear winner of your vote!  So here it is:

OfficeMood

I wanted something that was pretty gender neutral, classy, yet cozy at the same time!  I found the awesome rug and based my design off of that!  The desk is a large sized desk, but because of the glass top, appears to take up much less space!  The chair is classy, yet comfortable and the colors are cozy!

1. Continuum Desk from Stanley Furniture.

2. Soho Burst Rug from Overstock.com.

3. Continuum Upholstered Accent Chair from Stanley Furniture.

4. Kilcher Tristan Lamp.

5. Paint colors from Benjamin Moore.  Main Color:  Golden Bark and Accent Color: Sunburst

Ruffle Cork Board

This is a new little project that I recently completed.  I hope you like it.  I wanted to dress up my ordinary looking cork board. It started out looking like this. I spray painted it white and added some ruffles, and this was the end result.

Ruffle Cork Board

I’m so pleased and I really, really love it. It dresses up my office and is a great inspiration board now.  And the best thing about my new ruffle cork board?  It was easy, schmeasy to make.  Let me show you how.

Ruffle Cork Board

  1. I started with some about a 1/2 yard of light flannel fabric.  I cut the fabric into 1.5″-2″ squares.
  2. I pinched the fabric in the middle of the square and hand sewed it as best as I could to keep it’s figure.
  3. On the same thread, I kept stringing the fabric squares.  Once I had about 3-4 on the thread, I would start bunching them and sewing them together and trying to make each one look like a little flower ruffle.
  4. About 10-12 squares later, I had a little flower ruffle.  It took 10 little flowers to cover the top of my board.  I glued them on the board with a hot glue gun.

Viola!  A new little piece in my office.  So what do you think?  I myself love ruffles and they are easy accents to just about anything.   Can’t you just see these little flower ruffles on a pillow, or even a shirt?

Children’s Study Spaces

When planning a study space for your children, remember that everyone learns differently!  Keep this in mind as you plan your space.  Maybe they like studying with music on…make sure that there’s some type of music source close by so that they don’t have to get up to switch out music or adjust controls.  If they get easily distracted make sure it’ s in a quiet place and not looking out towards a window.   Even if you don’t have a whole room to devote to a study space a little section of their bedroom will work just fine!

Color theory is another post altogether so don’t worry too much about what color you choose to have in the space.  If it’s already in an existing room you’re probably going to go with colors already there.  If you’d like to add some color, and make it more of a personalized space for your child, go with their favorite color!  They’ll probably want to stay there longer because of it!

Make sure that you’ve got enough supplies close at hand so their train of thought doesn’t get broken too often as their looking for more paper, pens, staplers, etc.

Here are some inspiring study spaces I’ve found!

Monday Redesign-Trisha’s Office

Friday we saw Trisha’s office.  Today we’ve got her redesign.  I did keep in mind that Trisha and her family have put their house up for sale and are trying to move closer to family.  As I designed the space I made sure that any changes that are made, (other than paint) she can take with when she moves as they should all fit in a standard size office in just about any house!

I’ve kept the office in mostly neutral tones with small color accents.  An office should have a more soothing and clean feel to it!
Trisha's Redesign
1. Let’s divide up the wall a little and add a little more continuity to the space.  Paint the bottom 1/3 of the wall Sherwin Williams color SW6104 Kaffee and the top 2/3 of the room Sherwin Williams color SW6100 Practical Beige.  Add some white chair molding with a small ledge at the line between the two colors.

2. Dwell Studio Rug from Target.  This will provide a little pattern on the floor and help to pull the room together with the neutral color palette we’ve chosen.

3. Simple picture frames in varying sizes of the same style will be added to the ledge to provide a place for displaying some of her daughter’s artwork in a slightly more grown-up format.  They are also easy to change up as new artwork is available.  (If you’re worried about the frames being knocked off, try some heavy duty velcro along the top of the frame and velcro it directly to the wall.)

4. Add some sheers to the window.  This will continue to let plenty of light into the room, while providing a type of diffuser for less harsh light when filming video. (Which Trisha does a lot of from her office!)

5. Here’s where we add the color.  Simple wooden boxes painted in your accent colors from IKEA will bring in the color accents as well as provide nice, fashionable storage and help to keep things open and non-cluttered.

6. Casual Office Seating will allow for a variety of activities and flexibility in the room design.

I have kept most of her furniture for now, and when she moves she can update us with the dimensions and layout of her new office and we’ll do a new floor plan!

Thanks so much Trisha for letting me help you with your office!
